Upavon GC Juniors Championship was a 36 Hole medal competition held on Thursday 31 May 07.
A poor weather forecast resulted in a number of players withdrawing from the competition at the last minute, never the less, as they say “The show must go on”.

With a very accurate weather forecast all players started their morning rounds in conditions much akin to Scotland!  To my surprise a number of the juniors did NOT possess a set of waterproofs or at the bare minimum a brolly?  Thankfully once again Richard came to the rescue with a few last minute sales and a couple of loans from his store room.

The competition itself was played in great spirits, with a very tightly fought Gross match which resulted in two outstanding young men, Dominic Smart (2) and Callum Brown (4) leading the field by a considerable way from the remainder, in fact throughout the 36 Holes there was no more than a couple of strokes between the two.  The Nett competition was equally very tightly fought, finally being won by Pete McGowan with a 36 Hole Nett score of 136 (6 under par).
The Gross could not have been won in a more dramatic or script written finish, it all came down to the final hole (A tricky par 3 at the best of times), Dominic and Callum missed the green to the right, both players had what could only be described as difficult second shot, particularly as the pin was tight to the right hand bunker, Dominic chipped his shot stiff with a guaranteed par only to see a career shot from Callum drop into the hole for a birdie and win the Championship by one stroke (145 Gross over 36 Holes (3 over par)).

I can’t finish this match report without a mention to the young guns who played a 9 Hole Gross medal round mid afternoon, again poor weather reduced the field, but all who played had a great time, Lee Mellor won with a very credible 52 Gross over nine holes.

My personal thanks to all the competitors who took part, parents who gave up their time to come and watch, Ron Brown who assisted in the smooth running of the day including the prize giving photo’s, the Ladies who worked tirelessly to feed and water everyone throughout the day and a special thanks to Richard and Dan from the Pro shop without whom the day would not have been the great success that it was.
